Fiji Times: PAPUA New Guinea player Joann Lagona was one of the star performers in the first day of the 2012 Oceania Women's Sevens Championship. The 23-year-old flyer won the hearts of the spectators after leaving her opponents wanting with her unothodox side steps. Lagona said she started playing rugby when she was five years old and used to play against the men. "I am not new to 7s rugby as I have been playing the game at a very young age," she said. "At times when there are no women competitions in PNG, I play in the men's competition. "I am used to tough and physical competition and I am enjoying my moment here in Fiji."
When asked where she learnt her goose step step, she said: "Every Friday, I always watch the National Rugby League competitions in Australia and I always admire Benji Marshall's sidesteps." "So when I go training, I practise goose stepping and sidesteps." She also listed Fiji-born Australia dual international Lote Tuqiri as one of her rugby idols. Lagona scored five tries in their three pool games yesterday helping her team to qualify for the top four playoffs. PNG will meet New Zealand while Fiji will lock horns against the reigning world champion Australia. Comments are closed.
