Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ Papua New Guinea international Paul Aiton will be out for up to eight weeks with a broken jaw sustained during a mugging. The 27-year-old hooker, who has appeared in all the Wildcats’ 21 matches so far in his first season in England, was attacked during a short break in Spain last week. The former Kumuls skipper returned home the day after the incident and underwent surgery to have a metal plate inserted in his jaw. “He’s been assaulted and robbed,” said Wakefield coach Richard Agar, who gave his players time off because the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-finals left his team without a fixture last weekend.
“Unfortunately, he’s been in the wrong place at the wrong time and he’s been whacked around the face with an object. “He’s not sure if it was a bat or an iron bar which has knocked him down and they’ve taken his bag that had his phone, sunglasses and wallet inside of it and taken off with it. “It’s a real blow for us because he’s probably been our most consistent player and he’s our toughest player, that’s for sure. He’s really shaken up and it’s put a real downer on the start of our week.” Wakefield have recalled hooker Andy Ellis from his loan spell at Featherstone to cover the absence of Aiton.
