The 2014 Digicel Cup grand-final in Lae last Sunday which saw the Hela Wigmen defeating the Rabaul Gurias has been described as a disgrace by chief executive officer (CEO) of the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup and Mioks coach Timothy Lepa. Lepa said first and foremost the presence of the Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko during the match was not highlighted by the organisers to end the premier rugby league season 2014 in Papua New Guinea. Lepa said of all people, Tkatchenko was the right person to officiate at the opening including the kick- off and at least make a formal speech. Lepa said this is a slap in the face for the Sports Minister and the massive efforts of the national Government by pumping in millions to the PNG National Rugby League. “This is the worst ever grand final in the history of the Digicel as well as for Lae to host the grand final in its inaugural year,” said Lepa. He said the presence of several MPs and important guests including co-sponsors of the Digicel Cup as well the franchise received no acknowledgement, some had to be turned away at the main gate. Even the PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum at one stage was not allowed through the gates to the sideline. Lepa said another shortcoming is that the match was supposed to start at 2pm, instead kicked off after almost half an hour. “There was no communication and coordination within the event coordinators with two man-of-the-match named after the final hooter,” said Lepa. Lepa said for the Wigmen halfback and as well the winger named by two different persons on air as the man of the match is a total blunder. Lepa also questioned why the Enga Governor and patron of the Enga Mioks Peter Ipatas was given the honor to present the minor premiership cup saying it was a surprise. Hela Governor Anderson Agiru kicked off the 2014 Digicel Cup grand final.
