“PNG Politics needs more young like-minded people to come together often and debate, discuss and create changes, even solutions for our ever changing political arena.” These are the words of PNG’s first Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare when speaking to PNGFM newsroom. “In 1965, I was part of the formation of the BULLY BEEF CLUB, where myself and some of this country’s most respected statesmen came together and discussed the future of this country which also covered the role of political parties, “he said. Sir Michael was a star player in this club, as he was the young Sepik man, who drove this club with passion and determination by calling everyone together for deep discussions. He said it was a very successful club because everyone worked together with the aim of growing our very own kind of political leadership. “It was called the bully beef club because during our days at Sogeri, we were given allowances which we all put together to buy a few hard biscuits and corned beef and sit around after lectures and talk about what we should do as young people, even about the things that the Australian administration was doing at that time,” he added. Sir Michael believes that if PNG did not gain self-governance a lot of exploitation of our resources would have taken place and he re-calls how vital these continuous talks and discussions were at the BULLY BEEF CLUB. “A lot of young educated people forget that today, if we did not establish that leadership during those earlier years, we would not be where we are today, “he said. “A lot of our land, the Australian Government decided in those days that it belonged to the crown and then we had the issue in Bougainville where the people started asking for their land back and why they were not allowed to get something out of it.” Sir Michael said the Australian Government respected the rights of our people and let our people own the land and when he became Chief Minister and with the help of Chairman, Chief John Momis, he and the young leaders then created the country’s first constitution. “After 40 years of Independence, people of PNG should now be thinking about redirecting some of our directions to make people more accountable, even the good work ethics is missing in work places, in schools, in hospitals and Government offices.” Sir Michael said a lot of our young people now need DISCIPLINE and guidance at an early age in order to be agents of change for PNG in the world of politics.
