Talks are underway between the Provincial Administration and the East New Britain Chamber of Commerce to ensure visa documents are made available to travellers upon their arrival at Tokua Airport.
Currently tourist visas can only be obtained in Port Moresby. Acting Provincial Administrator, Akuila Tubal said a meeting was held during the public service shut down period, while the office of the Regional Member in Port Moresby is the focal point of coordinating with relevant departments. He says it’s an ongoing process and the provincial government is doing it’s best in getting national government plans implemented in the province, while they continue discussions with stakeholders to address obstacles along the way. He says the National Government has declared East New Britain as a tourism hub and the provincial government is doing it’s part to achieve this plan by working with Air Niugini through enhancing the Tokua –Cairns direct flight service. Tubal said the K58m allocation by the national government to the province for tourism development will include the expansion of Tokua Airport facilities into international standard with close consultation with the Office of Civil Aviation and relevant agencies like Customs.
