Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress has urged all members nationwide not to take part in any proposed demonstrations by any civil society organizations following controversy surrounding the K3 billion Kina acquired by state from Swiss Global Financing Services Bank UBS to buy states 10.1% shares in Oil Search Limited.
Union General Secretary John Paska told a news conference recently that he had received an unsigned letter from unknown civil society organization about the proposed demonstration. Paska says the letter contains allegations on the loan deal by the government about that investment and the intention for the proposed demonstration. Commenting on that letter he says the issues and arguments raised were too shadow in detailing the issue and the union could not see any reasons that will prompt reactions like public demonstrations. "On the questions of legality are, it's not the most recommended approach, particularly when you consider it's an investment issue". "Just like direct intervention in the market place. It goes against the brain of logic of market economics". "So we're calling on all workers not to participate in any demonstrations, there's no grounds for it, exceptionally there's no grounds for it". "And we're also calling on all members of the public to stay calm and allow due process to take place". " The prime minister has made a commitment to table the issue before parliament, that's part of the due process." Mr Paska says the Ombudsman Commission is also scrutinizing the deal, which is also part of the due process and as far as the legal aspect is concern. "There are many competitors in the business industry who compete vigorously against each other for a stake in projects worth millions. Often they manipulate the public and particularly NGOs and students to support their cause of they miss out on lucrative business deals. NGO's and students must not allow themselves to be manipulated by such people because in the end they(NGOs & students) get nothing". "There is so much distrust in this country. Sometimes we need to trust our leaders too. We are in the middle of exciting times in the short history of this nation. We all need to stand together to support development initiatives", Mr Paska, said. Comments are closed.
