A United Nations visiting representative on extra judicial, summary or arbitrary executions, has commanded National and Supreme Court judge David Cannings, for setting up an inquiry, into the rights of detained asylum seekers on Manus Island.
The Human Rights hearing will start this week. The U-N's Kristoff Heynes made the comments last Friday, after a visit to Manus. He says the inquiry will provide an important step to find out if there were abuses of human rights. Heynes also says the inquiry will ensure rights of transferees are protected. He further says there needs to be clarity on what terms asylum seekers are detained on Manus for. He says the UN's interest is the protection of human rights and not to question the agreement between Australian and PNG governments. Comments are closed.
