Two young men from West Sepik are being held in custody in Jayapura for smuggling drugs mainly Marijuana across the border into Indonesia.
Reports say the two men are from the Vanimo east coast and Aitape west coast. There were both reported to have traveled up to Bewani and were attempting to cross over from Skotchio using one of the many bush tracks when Indonesian military apprehended them. The incident is reported to have taken place last week. A youth from one of the settlement communities around Vanimo revealed this to the local radio after learning that the relatives of the two men were organizing themselves to travel across the border to visit them. Indonesia has very tough drug laws and its borders are protected with the PNG-Indonesia land border also given priority in that country's policing and monitoring of drug movement from the PNG side.
