World Wide this week people have been looking at and celebrating the achievements of the United Nations on its work done in partnering with governments as well as looking at challenges faced and how to improve on a better way forward.
UN Resident Coordinator in PNG, Mr Roy Trivedy says partnering with the government, civil society organisations and looking at improving lives of those vulnerable is really important and is also capture in the new sustainable development goals for the UN. "The United Nations started working in PNG during the time PNG gained its Independence, looking at Health, Education and looking at issues surrounding climate change as well as reducing poverty in the country." "The UN has been involved with assisting the government, CSO and other development partners in improving lives in PNG and so far there are 15 UN organisations working in PNG to help the people during this prolonged drought periods," said Mr Trivedy. Mr Trivedy said that Disaster Risk Reduction is an exercise that the UN is engaged in addressing throughout the world. He said that currently in PNG which the El-Nino Conditions have brought upon the lives of citizens, the UN is aware that over 848,000 people are being affected by this. "The UN will scale up to reduce the amount of people suffering from this severe drought and also work closely with other partners, CSOs as well as the government," said Mr Trivedy. The UN Resident Coordinator Mr Roy Trivedy also announced that in the coming weeks much more support from the UN will be coming in to help the government in addressing the drought currently faced in PNG. He made it known that not only UN will be supporting the PNG government to address this issues but also Civil Societies as well as other bilateral partners who are standing by to provide support and assistance to help people suffering from this drought. "With the drought periods faced in PNG, the UN will support the government to provide seeds for people to grow food crop that have died out during this period." "For the next 6 months or more we will provide long term support, working closely with the government, however, this depends partly on what the government asks for in seeking assistance from the UN as well as its partners here in the country," said Mr Trivedy. Furthermore, Mr Trivedy said that he UN is contributing to the El-Nino Response in a number of ways. "We have done awareness, assessments, and also having a food program on how best we can supply food supply to the communities affected by the dry elnino condition, said Mr Trivedy. But the Resident Coordinator says the UN is awaiting the call from the government for it to come in and do more to help the people in PNG affected by the drought. Trivedy also pointed out that proper planning and proper coordination to addressing the current widespread of drought in the country is essential in order for partners and government to work together in helping our people who are suffering. He also said that the seriousness of the Drought in the country is potential enough for the government of PNG to call for a state of emergency. "Its important to save lives and the government needs to look into addressing this situation for the betterment of the people of PNG who are suffering at this time, Mr Trivedy said." "The United Nations is not only here to observe but are here to participate and help the government of PNG in addressing the drought issues affecting the people right around the country," he said. Resident Coordinator Roy Trivedy says they are only waiting on the government to invite them and they will work in partnership to ensure our people receive much needed help during this time of prolong drought in the country caused by the Elnino weather conditions.
