THE Trade Union Congress yesterday said it fully supports the role and functions
of the Ombudsman Commission but the timing of the referral of the Prime Minister only raises a lot of questions than answers. PNGTUC general secretary John Paska, in a statement, said the union fully supports the role and functions of the Ombudsman Commission and does not for once suggest that the Chief Ombudsman or any of the commission staff have compromised their role, functions and integrity. "However the referral of the Prime Minister to the Public Prosecutors Office at a time when the matter is before the court and may be considered contemptuous and indeed raises questions about timing and legitimacy of the referral," Mr Paska said. "If anything, it weakens the Ombudsman Commissions case since it can be argued by the Prime Ministers legal team that it has unfairly disadvantaged the Prime Ministers case before the courts and also the public. "It also sets the case for possible libelous suit. "On the question of executive powers of government , we are threading dangerous grounds if the Ombudsman Commission or indeed any other relevant agencies of government can elect to exercise their powers at any time to intervene in the executive powers of government with a view to circumvent or subdue the omissions or commissions of government. "Its rather like running a government with an axe over their heads," Mr Paska said. Comments are closed.
