PNG Power Ltd advises the general public in Port Moresby that it is experiencing a shortfall in generation capacity therefore load shedding is being carried out for an indefinite period. Port Moresby experienced two total power outages on Wednesday, March 23 due to technical faults on the city’s power grid. The first power outage which occurred at 1.55am early Wednesday morning was initiated by a fault on transmission line 545 which connects the Exxon Mobil LNG Power Plant, Kanudi and Moitaka. Attempts to restore the line resulted in the system tripping out a machine at the Moitaka Power Station. This caused the second total power outage in the city last night. The line is now out of service until a line patrol is conducted and the fault is identified and fixed. This means that the LNG Power Plant supply is offline and the Port Moresby system is short on generation by 25 Megawatts (MW). As the general public has been made aware numerous occasions, the low water level at the Sirinumu Dam has resulted in the Rouna Hydro Power Stations scaling down on its generation capacity. Currently it is generating only 5 MW. Its normal generation capacity is 54MW. The LNG Power plant has been supplementing the shortfall that Rouna can’t generate. With the gas power plant now offline, PPL can’t do much but carry out load shedding until the issue is rectified. PPL is keeping its customers informed through radio announcements and through its social media pages. If you experience prolonged outages or want more information, call the National Call Centre on 7090 8000, 7653 5261 or 7653 5272. You can also email callcentre@pngpower.com.pg
