Minister for Sports, National events and action Member for Moresby South Hon. Justin Tkatchenko has raised serious concern last weekend over customary land in his electorate being sold for fast cash that will have detrimental effects on the traditional Motu Koitabuans in the future. Minister Tkatchenko was speaking to his people from Yobakul settlement in six mile, on Sunday at the launch of Koblaku association. The association comprises of the Milaku, Kunareku, Egeku and the Neraku clan from Mul in the Gumine district of Simbu province. They have registered their clan association and have signed a leasing agreement with land owner Joe Tinting Saraga and Member for Moresby South Electorate Hon. Justin Tkatchenkoto assured the traditional land that they are settling on is properly divided into subdivision, and proper title be given to the pioneer Simbu settlers living there so that the land is not tempered by illegal land grabbers and opportunist. Mr. Tkatchenko said it’s a historical moment that the Kobakul tribe from Gumine must celebrate as that piece of land has been given to them by the Saraga family. “Today is September 11th and the world is commemorating the 9/11 attack by Terrorist on American soil, on this day you must also remember that a generous family from a Motu/Koitabuan tribe, the Saraga family from NCD has solidified their relationship with the Kobakul tribe from Gumine in Simbu on this mountain of Yobakul and it’s a first time I have witnessed this prime land given away to you.” He said. Mr.Tkatchenko said this portion of land was misapplied by another land owner group with vested interests but he has helped the Saraga family through court battle and won the land back for the original customary land owners. And to launch and witness such significant event is a historical moment because his vision is to make Moresby South a better role model district in National Capital District, so that everyone from all ethnic tribes, races, and places who come to live in Port Moresby must always respect the customary land owners and respect each other to live in unity and happiness. “My vision is to ensure that all our people in Moresby South electorate live in peace, so that you can eat and sleep well for a happier secure healthy and wealthy society without being living in fear of being evicted.” He said. “You have lived more than fifty years on this piece on land, and this has become your home. Where can you go from here? I want to thank the Saraga family for their kind heart that they have to give this piece of asset to you. We will continue to work together with them and other traditional land owners, to ensure proper leasing agreement is done for mutual benefit and sustainability rather than selling the land for K50.00 ,K100.00 and K10,000.00.” He said. The Minister said the new Saraga Market has cost a lot of money and will benefit the people of six mile. Many houses will be constructed soon on the site with few sample buildings to be put up before next year. The people of Yobakul and the Kobakul Association will benefit greatly under this new initiative by the Moresby South Electorate MP in partnership with the National Capital District Commission, and Office of NCD Governor Powes Parkop to ensure settlers are given the benefit of the doubt for proper title on customary land they are settling on in Port Moresby. Customary land owner Joe Tinting Saraga has said that the Koblaku clan of Gumine in Simbu has lived with his family and clan for many years, and he is pleased to give this land to them to settle permanently so that they all lived as families in the years to come. “No one in Port Moresby will give you free land, but I am taking a bold stand to break this bondage of greed, self-ambition for money by sharing this asset with you so we can live as family by using our talents and initiatives by making use of this opportunity to make our living happier and successful.” He said. Six Mile Police station Commander Fred Bare has urged the community members to appreciate this golden gift given to the Koblaku clan by the Saraga family and urge the parents to send their children to school to receive better education and not turn to crime as a means of survival. “The Six mile area is a notorious crime spot for some time, but this has changed with the flow of Government services into the community. We must appreciate the efforts and major development brought in by our Member for Moresby South Hon. JustinTkatchenko. Education is the only resource that will improve our living standard, and to live happily and successfully on this land that you are given by the customary land owners we need an educated population.” He said. Mr. Bare said, with the increase of population in the six mile area, Government services and facilities such as the police station, the health centre and the only primary school needs an urgent upgrade. He has appealed to the Minister to work in collaboration with Member for North East, Hon. Labi Amaiu and NCD Governor Powes Parkop to give a facelift to the deteriorating government facilities. Meanwhile community leader and a member of the Koblaku Association Mr. Thomas Bogi has thanked Minister Justin Tkatchenko and Customary land owner Mr. Joe Tinting for accepting the invitation for the launch of this historical event and signing the agreement for the people of Koblaku to settle on this land that they have lived since 1960s. “Our fore fathers from Simbu were the first settlers from the Highlands to live in six mile with the Saraga family. Now we appreciate Joe and the family for honouring us as promised by your Chief Gran father, and for that God will bless you richly.” He said. “As a first settler in Port Moresby we need to have access to proper government services, such as water, sanitation, power, schools, health, law and order. To live a wise, healthy, secure and wealthy community as stipulated in the Vision 2050 and not to push us out of the land our gran parents has lived since 1060’s. I thank Yawai clan which Joe Tintin is the next of kin as the traditional land owner to uphold the commitment his gran father has done to our parents as a sign of mutual respect and in the true spirit of giving a rare asset that will benefit our people immensely in the generation to come.” Mr. Bogi said.
