TEAM PNG FINALIZES SQUADS FOR PACIFIC GAMES
Papua New Guinea will now know which athletes will be representing them at this year’s Pacific Games in Port Moresby from July 4th to 18th. Accreditation for the Games closed on Wednesday 20th May with only the final list of teams registered on the system. This means no more athletes or officials can be added to the squads. Papua New Guinea will be represented by 574 athletes and 206 officials. Of this, 446 are men and 334 are women. Full team lists will be released in the media for each sport. The team will also have support from the trainers and medical staff and other specialists from the PNG Olympic Committee’s High Performance Division. This ends all the justification and accreditation processes and only those athletes endorsed and confirmed will dawn the PNG colours for battle during the Games. Team PNG Chef De Mission, Richard Kassman said they are pleased that this part of their preparation work is complete so that they can now focus on the final teams and athletes. “We now know which athletes will be representing us and we are focusing our efforts more on them to see that they get the best help possible to be set for the Games. “With this teams, we are ready to compete on home soil against our visitors and I would like to encourage all Papua New Guineans to get your tickets to come along and support your team,” Kassman said. “So, far we have had very promising results from lead-up competitions abroad in most of our sports and we are confident of carrying that good form into the Games,” he said. With world class training facilities and athlete care being given to athletes, Kassman and his management team are confident that they have the best prepared team for the Games and are looking forward to hosting the other countries in July. PNG will compete in all 28 sports in both men’s and women’s divisions except for rugby league 9’s which does not have a women’s competition.
