The high cost of manufactured goods and low income has caused many teachers in Kutubu to shift professions.
Teachers are leaving their teaching profession to join the workforce in the Kutubu Oil Project where the pay is better. This concern was raised by teachers within the Kutubu Oil Project area. Moro is operated under strict safety guidelines by Oil Search Limited, the developer of the Kutubu Oil Project. Jerry Pereap teaches at Kutubu primary school, a few kilometres drive from Moro. Jerry says most of his colleagues have left teaching to work in the oil project as security guards because the pay is tripled a primary school teachers’ pay. He made a comparison of high prices of goods at Moro to prices in Mendi. He said the Education department should fact tract other entitlements like the disadvantage entitlement for them to meet extra costs. Also raising concerns were group of vendors who have migrated to Moro from Nipa. Simon Koma is one of the vendors who sell cigarettes and betel nut at the bus stop. He says business here is much better than back in Nipa. Mothers and children selling small items at the bus stop have migrated from other districts in Southern Highlands and some even from other provinces. EMTV Comments are closed.
