Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko called an urgent awareness meeting this evening at the Kilakila Police Barracks to address a recent outbreak of Tuberculosis in the areas ranging from Gabutu, Konebada, Kilakila and Taikone in the Moresby South electorate. Minister Tkatchenko said his reason for calling the urgent awareness meeting was because in the past few weeks over a hundred TB cases have been reported at the local Kaugere Health Centre and this was not good news as TB is now a killer disease in communities and his electorate needs to be healthy and productive. The minster reported that every year his office receives requests of help from haus krais under the Haus Krai Scheme of his office and from the 500 plus requests received this year so far, 60% of the deaths are TB related. He adviced the residents of Kilakila and the nearby areas and their families to start taking tests immediately and commence treatment if diagnosed with TB as these services are free and subsidized by the government and his office. He also urged the community to be aware of their hygiene and lifestyle habits as these are the main causes of TB.
