It has been the third week of meetings and still the National Taskforce on Ebola remains in dialogue with no definite plans of action.
This was the main outcome evident from the national emergency response meet today. “While Ebola is a very dangerous threat, the risks of it getting here to our country are still very low.” These were the comments made by the NDOH Executive Manager Public Health Dr Sibauk Bieb to other stakeholders today. Could this be the main reason behind all the dialogue? What is evident is that all airline personnel are not yet trained; there is no quarantine room at the Jacksons International Airport or even the Ports. Moreover, Dr Bieb also declared that the National Taskforce team had yet to acquire an isolation ward in the general hospitals or a suitable location. Granted, there is now a suitable questionnaire for all international visitors to fill in at Immigration before they are allowed to vacate the terminal, little else has been done yet. While the Disease Emergency Response, Monitoring and Surveillance team chaired the meets, today’s discussion was focused on the terms of reference for the stakeholders and appointing a suitable chairperson or organization for specific areas in the National Emergency Plan. But it would be well for the Government, National Health Department and stakeholders to bear in mind that it is better to be safer than to be sorry. As Dr Bieb has stated, “Regardless of the low possibility, it is better to be prepared and not have a case than to be unprepared and find ourselves with Ebola already on our doorsteps.” For that, would be a national catastrophe in itself.
