Arrangements are in place for specimens from suspected cases of Ebola to be sent to Australia for testing.
Manager for Disease Control and Surveillance Response Bary Ropa says the suspected specimens will be sent to Victoria Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory. Mr Ropa says the Central Health Public Laboratory in Port Moresby will play a key role in sample processing and shipment. He says the National Department of Health has prioritized communication, awareness and surveillance including training to prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease. Ropa says a risk communication program will take place within the next six months to prepare for the disease. Meantime the technical working groups established under the task force will concentrate on communication, surveillance, and clinical management, transportation, training and preparedness including logistics. Mr Ropa says an infection control manual was in place to guide health workers during any outbreaks of Ebola disease. He added consultative meetings are in progress, ensuring that all ports of entry both at sea and land are prepared for Ebola.
