The PNG Defence Force Chief of Staff Colonel Mark Goina says no soldier is authorized to take sides with civilians and issue threats to the public.
This follows a complaint raised by the community living at Bundi Camp Settlement in Sabama, Port Moresby, where a group of soldiers threatened to burn down their homes, if they were not compensated K10 000 following a drunken brawl over the weekend. It was alleged that a civilian Alex Kema who has been using boats to smuggle betel nut into the city through Taurama got into a fight whilst drinking at Bundi Camp settlement. The fight was between Kema and his relatives. He then went to Taurama Barracks and mobilized some seemingly drunk soldiers who went and threatened the community to prepare compensation or have their homes burnt down this Saturday. Community leaders and eye witnesses said they are innocent and have no such money to pay for what they did not do. Meanwhile, Col Goina says he will speak to the bosses in Taurama as well as PNGDF Commander Gilbert Toropo, and warned of such threats being issued to civilians over a matter that did not involve PNGDF. He also added that he had not received any information that there was an incident between soldiers and the community there. PNG Facts/PNG Village
