According to PNGEDGE a PNGDF soldier was caught yesterday trying to smuggle betel nut from the Central Province into Port Moresby.
He was apprehended last night at a manned road block at Laloki, where police are stationed to enforce the betelnut ban. NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bawa sis disappointed that someone from the disciplinary forces was caught opely breaking the law. “It is disappointing to see people, particularly members of the disciplinary forces, smuggling betelnut into the city,” says Bawa. Bawa sounded a strong warning to anyone who intends to smuggle buai that it is a criminal offence and they will be charged appropriately. And he has placed an equally tough warning on his police officers in the city. “There are also police officers smuggling betel nut into the city in marked and unmarked vehicles,” says Bawa, “and I want to warn every police officer who is using a police car or a civilian car for that matter and smuggling betel nut into the city they will face the full brunt of the law. A complete ban on the sale of buai in Port Moresby will officially commence on Tuesday. Source: PNGEDGE Comments are closed.
