The current State of Emergency on PNG Power has collected 15 million Kina from the debtors so far right around the country.
Today is the sixth day since the PNG Power Technical team on SOE began their exercise, last Thursday. Government announced last week, SOE is established to recoup a total of more than 200 million kina owed to PNG Power in outstanding bills by the defaulters and to resurrect the company. Under the Sate of Emergency, the controller, Captain Alois Ur Tom and his team are required to collect the monies within the two months period. According to the progressive report presented by the controller, 15 million kina have been recouped within the last few days. Public Enterprises and Sate Investments minister Ben Micah said more are expected to come in the next few weeks. The debt collection is mainly from private business houses and individual defaulters, whilst the outstanding bills of some millions of Kina incurred by the government departments and agencies have been paid straight from the Finance Department to PNG Power, according to Ben Micah's instruction.
