Small businesses in developing countries will benefit from the APEC Leaders Meeting, currently underway in the Philippines.
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said, the main areas of discussion for the APEC Leaders, centre around the topic of inclusive growth for people from the region, with an emphasis on human resources development, and investing in education to enhance the capacity of our people in the areas of healthcare, science and technology. Mr. O'Neill said, important issues for PNG, includes the enhancement of the role of women in the economy, empowering rural communities, and helping small businesses participate in global supply chains, and this will be vigorously pushed in this APEC Meeting, as well as others that will follow. He also added that it is important that PNG now contributes to the APEC process, and not just be a recipient of knowledge, skills and training as was the case for many years. The Prime Minister also said that through APEC, barriers to trade are now broken down, thus enabling small businesses to gain advantage from global trade, and PNG must create opportunities for small and medium enterprises, to export directly overseas, or provide to local exporters within the country.
