One of the country's founding fathers today singled out the role of a prime minister and a leader emphasizing the importance of abiding by the law.
Speaking at the second day of the Waigani Seminar in Port Moresby, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare says all leaders must practice effective leadership. The Prime Minister has a civil case before the court regarding payments to a law firm. Others jailed by the criminal court include former Pomio MP, Paul Tiensten, Komo Magarima's Francis Potape who was recently freed by the Supreme Court, and Gulf Governor, Havilo Kavo who's out on bail. Several others have faced leadership tribunals for misconduct, while others are pending. Sir Michael says, there is one law for all citizens, and leaders must abide by that law. The Governor of East Sepik says the country's leaders must follow the principles of good governance to deliver Papua New Guinea into the future. Sir Michael says he understood his role as Chief Executive of the nation and subjected himself to the law because no one is above the law. He says he accepted two successful votes of no confidence against him according to the Constitution and stood down from office. Sir Michael says he faced a tribunal under the Leadership Code of the institution he created - the Ombudsman Commission - and accepted the decision to be suspended from office for two weeks. The Grand Chief challenged young people to be effective leaders in their respective areas of service and be diligent. Sir Michael says he believes he contributed to the country's future as a servant leader.
