There was a near chaos and confusion, together with reports of public looting of shops in Port Moresby, following a confrontation between police and defence force members late last night and since dawn today.
It is understood, Police officers fired shot at soldier but those soldiers who were injured during the confrontation are fine and recovering at the Port Moresby General Hospital But opportunists around the two-mile area ransacked and looted the J-Mart Supermarket and liquor store at the Foodland surburb. Crowds numbering more than some hundreds and consisting mainly of youths, rushed into the store and grabbed anything they could lay their hands on, before being chased away by soldiers from the Murray Barracks who were manning the roadblock about two hundred meters away. Meantime, the Police hierarchy has advised of a media conference this afternoon, to talk about the clash between the two disciplined forces. Commander Jerry Frank with out much detail says it was an alcohol related incident between the police and Defence. The Hierarchies of both Police and PNG Defence Force are aware of the incident and are having an urgent meeting at the Boroko Police Station, whilst police are heavily manning the Boroko area.
