THE remains of US military personnel who died in Papua New Guinea during World War II have been sent back home.
The repatriation ceremony at Jackson Airport followed the successful underwater investigation and recovery mission onboard the US Naval Ship Safeguard in Simpson Harbour, Rabaul, from Nov 11 to Dec 12. The recovery was conducted by the US Joint Prisoners Of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command (JPAC). US Ambassador to PNG Walter North said more than 70 years ago, US servicemen died in an epic struggle on the land, sea and air as a result of the Pacific War. North said the fallen would not be forgotten and he reassured families in the US that the search would continue for their lost relatives. North commended the continued support and work done by the PNG Defence Force, JPAC, National Museum and the locals for their understanding which led to the successful operation. North stressed the importance of JPAC’s mission and reminded them that through their mission in PNG, they contributed greatly to bringing home the remains of the military personnel.
