Prime Minister Peter O’Neill announced on Monday that he will resettle illegal settlers and work with MPs to issue land titles to them.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill made the announcement to more than 3000 people during a water project launch at Eight-Mile settlement in the Moresby Northeast electorate. "We do not want our country to look like Africa and other countries in the world that are affected greatly by poverty, disease and hunger," he said. He said the influx of people into city settlements was to seek better services like health and education, and a good life that they have not enjoyed for the past 37 years. The Prime Minister said that for too long PNG has been looking for better services and development to reach the remote areas, and within three years, changes have been taking place, adding that remote areas are seeing government services through the Provincial Support Improvement Programs and District Support Improvement Program. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill added that there were complaints from individuals and NGOs saying that remote areas have not received government services while Port Moresby is developing rapidly. "Well, these people complaining should travel to provinces and see for themselves what the Government is doing rather than sitting in their offices, complaining and working for handouts. "We are not power-hungry! We are rebuilding the nation because we want the country to move forward. "I know that our country is growing stronger and stronger, and in the next five to ten years time, this stable government today, and its solid policies, will build the nation for your children and a strong economy. "I will forfeit the land and give it back to you, and we will make sure to give you land titles," PM O’Neill told illegal settlers at Eight-Mile settlement.
