Improving standards of the roles of women in prisons are challenging but through learning from each other’s experience, we could develop a way forward.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill highlighted this at the opening of the 4th Pacific Islands regional women’s correctional conference at Bomana yesterday. "This conference reminds us of the important role women play in our society, especially in the law and justice sector, and in this profession of correctional services. "The roles that women play are often not widely appreciated by some in government and the community," said Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill. He said it is because of many constraints and the challenges that we continue to face as a nation and nations within the Pacific region. He believes our challenges are quite unique, unlike many others in the international community, and having a fast growing population at present places a huge demand on government services and infrastructure. "With the limitations of resources and funding, some of the areas get neglected over time and correctional services have been one of them. The prime minister stated that Papua New Guinea will see that we have made a determined effort in making sure that we address the challenges faced by our law and justice sector in the country. "We are putting more funding than any other government in the past. "As a result you can see a slight improvement, but there are many more challenges ahead of us and we all need to build on these foundations and the small steps that we are taking today. "Infrastructure and capacity is always a challenge for many of our government agencies and correctional services is no exception. The Government has embarked on a review program for correctional services in our country, which the CS minister has taken to Cabinet and Cabinet is now looking through that submission. "We are going to have an independent review of the entire correctional services program aimed at building capacity and increasing training facilities such as this. And I know that this is a training facility that we will be extending to many of the other Pacific Island nations." Comments are closed.
