Prime Mininste Peter O'Neill has depended the NEC's decision to appoint Howard Maliso as the acting Ombudsman Commisioner.
Mr. O'Neill said, a majority of the members to the Ombudsman Appointment Committee agreed by circular resolution and recommended Howard Maliso to be appointed acting Ombudsman Commissioner. Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said this yesterday in response to Opposition Leader Belden Namah’s letter regarding the appointment. Mr Namah’s letter was written to Ilagi Vali, the Secretary for Prime Minister and National Executive Council who is also the Secretary to the Ombudsman Appointment Committee. Ombudsman Maliso signed his appointment instruments at the Government House before Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio last week. This is despite the position now before the Ombudsman Appointment Committee and advertised in the media. It was raised that the acting appointment was not necessary as per Mr Namah’s letter to the Ombudsman Appointment Committee. "Reference is made to your circular No. 02/2014 regarding recommendation to Head of State for an acting Ombudsman. I take note of the Committee Members respective decisions. My decision would be that the acting appointment is not necessary at this stage as the position has been advertised," Mr Namah wrote in his letter to Mr Vali, a copy of which is with the Post-Courier. But the Appointments Committee yesterday defended the acting appointment claiming every legal process was followed and majority members of the appointments committee agreed to the acting appointment. "He is just one of the members and majority agreed by circular resolution and recommended for the appointment by the Secretariat on the list of people provided to us by Ombudsman," said Mr O’Neill. "This is also a short term appointment as the position has already been advertised for permanent appointment very soon." Comments are closed.
