Items looted during the fire that burnt down the Brian Bell Homecentre in Lae have been confiscated and locked up by police, says Lae police chief Iven Lakatani.
Mr Lakatani said the items are now locked up at the Town station and Three-Mile station for safety reasons. He said during the time of the fire, police were outnumbered by the crowd that gathered to watch the fire but they did their best to confiscate items from looters that night. Mr Lakatani said the items confiscated would be given back to Brian Bell’s manager because those items were insured and cost millions. However, he slammed the false allegations on the social media website Facebook that said some items were taken by police officers. "This is not true. Police officers on the ground did their work in confiscating looted items and bringing them to the police station but were also using different vehicles. Officers did not get any items for their benefit," he said. He said a vehicle was also among items recovered from the looters. "The glass of the vehicle was broken as looters wanted to take advantage of it. Fortunately, the vehicle was attended to and towed to the police station as well," he said. Mr Lakatani said the crowd that night was huge and police had to call the off duty officers to attend to the scene as the officers on duty were outnumbered. He said that if there was any allegation that confiscated items were in officers’ houses, searches would be done as soon as possible. Comments are closed.
