PNG Minister for Police, Robert Atiyafa has warned opposition members to refrain from interfering with the work of the police. He was responding to the statement released by acting Opposition leader Sam Basil that directed at the work of the police force, that the Minister said demonstrates the acting Opposition Leader’s lack of experience and inability to understand due processes. Mr Atiyafa described Mr Basil's statement as “a blatant attempt at political interference in the work of police.” “These kind of statements are directed at influencing investigations, and this cannot be tolerated from politicians. “Our police must be impartial and the acting Opposition Leader must refrain from attempting to influence police work,” Mr Atiyafa said. “If Mr Basil is to be taken seriously in his new role he needs to step up a level in his understanding of how and why we have due process in our legal system,” Mr Atiyafa said. He said the case involving the Prime Minister, which was noted by Mr Basil, raised a number of serious questions that must be answered before a warrant could be executed. “This whole Paraka mess is a scandal of the Somare Government, for which the O’Neill Government stepped in to find the truth. “Still no one knows why so much money was disappearing to private law firms and if this was legal.
