FOUR members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force have been arrested for allegedly smuggling betel nuts into Port Moresby.
Police said the soldiers, based at Murray Barracks, were caught brining in bags of betel nuts from Central to Port Moresby. National Capital District police operations commander Supt Perou N’Dranou said police were tipped off that the four soldiers were travelling from Papa village, in Central, to Port Moresby with the bags. N’Dranou said the vehicle they were travelling in was tailed by police until they reached the Boroko roundabout at 2am yesterday. He said the soldiers had by then sold a few of the bags. N’Dranou said the driver of the vehicle did not have a valid driving licence. He said the soldiers faced charges of illegal transportation of betel nuts, drunk and disorderly conduct and driving without a licence. Defence Force chief of staff Colonel Alois Ur Tom issued a warning to soldiers. Tom warned soldiers to refrain from using military assets or proerty to transport betel nuts into Port Moresby. He said any soldier, regardless of his or her rank, caught using military property, such as vehicles, to transport betel nuts into the city and the military barracks would be disciplined.
