A commotion between police and defence force in Hela province over the weekend has left three policemen hospitalized in Tari.
A community leader from Tari who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, told NBC News from Tari yesterday, the incident started after policemen returning from Mendi in a vehicle refused to be checked by PNG Defence Force soldiers, manning a check point at Tango in the Komo Margarima district. The defence Force had been engaged to provide security at the PNG LNG Gas project. The leader says the incident happen after police vehicle returning from Mendi, was asked to be checked by soldiers manning a check-point. After a long argument, the soldiers forced open the door of the police vehicle and found more than 50 cartons of beer inside. The police vehicle was escorted to Tari police station, where the policemen were by bashed up by the soldiers and locked away at Tari police station, while the cartons of beer were confiscated. In retaliation to the incident, police in Tari mobilized and bashed up two defence force soldiers and took their ammunitions while other four soldiers escaped unhurt. Those ammunitions were returned to the soldiers after provincial police commander of the new Hela province intervened. The report says the soldiers later came in a convoy of vehicles and held up a police vehicle and bashed up the three police officers in the vehicle, who were later admitted to Tari hospital. The Tari District Hospital confirmed receiving the three police men but said they were discharged yesterday after being treated. People in Komo- Margarima district have condemned the action of the policemen in smuggling alcohol into the province as they are supposed to be maintaining law and order in the province.
