The New Ireland Commerce and Industry office has been directed to investigate the Poliamba Oil Palm estate in the province.
This is following complaints by landowners that the company has not compensated them for the land and the pollution, its causing to the environment since its establishment. Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Richard Maru announced the move after personally visiting the area to investigate the concerns raised by the landowners. "They claim that their waterways are all polluted from the fertilizer and all the other pollutants that are entering all the streams, and the company has not even thought about building safe water supplies for the village. "After 22 years, the company has done very well out of all this land and our people have been live like that. "You can't see any change to their lives as a result of the project. "So I've told them, that the national government through the department will be setting up a full investigation team to investigate all their complaints and I've tasked the commerce department in New Ireland to provide the initial project agreement and to articulate the issues, hear from the company and bring a formal report up so that the national government can investigate all these complaints," Minister Maru said. Maru says while it is important for foreign developers to come into the country and invest, they must also consider the people's welfare. Comments are closed.
