FORMER Papua New Guinea diplomat and World Bank employee Dame Meg Taylor has
been elected the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretariat. The Papua New Guinean was the former PNG ambassador to the United States and until recently was a compliance ombudsman with the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group based in Washington D.C. She will be the first woman to head the PIF Secretariat and will be supported by two female deputy secretaries in Andie Fong Toy (economic, political governance and security) and Cristelle Pratt (strategic partnerships, coordination and corporate services). It will be the first time in the history of the organisation for it to be headed by women. Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said Dame Meg was entering the PIF Secretariat with a wealth of experience. "Beyond her professional capacity, one of the traits that will see Dame Meg succeed at the Forum Secretariat is her compassion. Dame Meg Taylor, as the incoming secretary general, will be inspirational leader to her staff and the range of technical officials she will work with across Forum operations," he said in a statement last night. Dame Meg was also a founding member of the PNG Chapter of Transparency International (TIPNG) when the anti-corruption watchdog was set up by the late Sir Anthony Siaguru. TIPNG chair Lawrence Stephen last night said they were delighted to hear of her appointment to the Pacific Islands’ top regional post. He said she was a supporter, a board member and mentor and critic of the PNG Chapter and the region will benefit from her experience. Comments are closed.
