The Prime Minister has welcomed the start of two important APEC conferences taking place in Papua New Guinea this week.
The APEC Energy Working Group Meeting and the APEC Capacity Building Workshop on Trade and Investment Issues are taking place concurrently. The Energy Working Group Meeting will cover issues that include ways in which APEC economies can increase energy efficiency, strengthening the APEC Energy Standards Information System and latest developments in the APEC Energy Smart Communities Initiative. The APEC Capacity Building Workshop will strengthen the capability of Papua New Guinea’s officials to engage more deeply in APEC Committee on Trade and Investment Issues as part of preparations to host APEC in 2018. This is being undertaken through the support of the United States’ Department of State. “APEC is a priority for Papua New Guinea as it expands export opportunities, provides us with better access to technical expertise to help our businesses and government agencies, and ultimately leads to job creation,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said. “We welcome the delegates who are coming from each of APEC’s 21 member economies, most of whom are visiting Papua New Guinea for the first time.” The Prime Minister said that the nation will gain significantly from increased engagement through APEC in the coming years. “Often people think APEC is one meeting each year, but APEC is much bigger than that and will provide a significant boost to our economy through to our increased involvement. “Between now and the end of 2018 we will host up to 200 APEC meetings that will cover a range of important sectors for the national economy. “This includes work that will streamline transportation so that we can get our goods to market more efficiently, increase the mobility of our businesspeople to trade in the region and increase technical cooperation so that our farms can be more productive. “APEC also has a number of cross-cutting forums that work across grassroots sectors including small and medium enterprises, women’s economic empowerment, sustainable development.” The Prime Minister said he hopes all delegates make the most of their visit to Papua New Guinea and they enjoy the nation’s diverse culture.
