The national Government will take on a zero tolerance approach on corrupt practices, especially on those who deal directly with millions of kina allocated to districts and provinces for service improvement. The stern warning came from leader of government business and Finance Minister James Marape during the opening of a two-day conference for district and provincial treasurers in the highlands and southern regions, in Mt Hagen last Wednesday.
The Finance Department and other relevant government agencies conducted the conference to prepare the treasurers for the huge task ahead in ensuring the millions of kina that got into their hands were wisely used for the intended purposes. Mr Marape also emphasised the importance of the timely dispersion of duties in real time transactions, meaning procurement of goods and services without compromising the integrity of the process and monthly reporting of how money is used, instead of remitting financial details after longer periods. The minister called for extra efforts, vigilance and hard working attitudes as his department has looked into work conditions, housing and training benefits to prepare the treasury staff who deal with huge sums of money.
