The United Nations Resident Coordinator in the country says, PNG will not reach its Millennium Development Goals by 2015, but commended the Government for taking massive steps towards realizing these world goals.
Roy Trivedy told NBC National Radio, the steps taken by the O'Neil government to introduce free education and basic health care, is progress enough in recognizing these goals. "We are probably not going to acheive most of these targets by 2015. "But we should not despair, because what we need to do is to double our efforts to really make sure that we continue to accelarate progress, and that we build on what has happened so far. "The current government has done some really good things, and announced some big policy changes, and we need to get behind it and really work at all different levels - at National level, in the provinces, but also in our communities to try and improve the lives of all Papua New Guineans," Mr. Trivedi said.
