AN immigration transit facility will be built in Port Moresby to cater for illegal immigrants and over-stayers, it has been revealed.
Chief Migration Officer Mataio Rabura said it was increasingly important to tighten security and properly manage the borders “in line with modern and best practices”. “We recognise that there is a need to manage those foreign nations who are refused entry to PNG, or who are detected having overstayed or having entered the country illegally,” he said. He said the Immigration Citizenship Security Authority had been planning the facility for some time. The facility will be built at Bomana. He signed an agreement last week with Correctional Institutional Service Commissioner Michael Waipo. “It will enhance PNG’s national security and will allow for the detention of such persons, separate from the prison population,” he said. He said it was part of the amendments to the Migration Act approved by Cabinet and to be tabled in parliament shortly. He said the amendments would “properly define immigration detention, enhance powers to detain and remove those unlawfully in the country”. Waipo said they would ensure that the security at the facility was maintained and “will allow better management of foreigners released from prisons after serving their sentences”. Rabura said the Australian Immigration and Border Protection department would fund the construction of the facility to begin early next year. Comments are closed.
