The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O’Neill has raised the prospect of establishing direct flights from Papua New Guinea to Thailand. In a bilateral meeting with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Air Marshall, Prajin Juntong, on the sidelines of the APEC Leaders’ Summit in Lima this week, Prime Minister O’Neill said as trade and tourism continues to expand the new air link would be viable. PM O’Neill further raised the prospect of Thailand purchasing future LNG production from Papua New Guinea and establishing greater co-operation on fisheries. The Prime Minister further restated the condolences of the nation following the sad passing of Late King of Thailand, His Majesty, Bhumibol Adulyadej. “The Late King of Thailand was widely respected around the world for his gentle and peaceful approach to resolving tensions, and his humble nature. “As the host of APEC in 2003, the Late King, His Majesty, Bhumibol Adulyadej, received APEC Leaders on what I understand to be one of the most successful APEC years in the history of the forum.” PM O’Neill said the prospect of direct flights between Papua New Guinea and Thailand will create opportunity for increased business travel and tourism, and also have the potential for the movement of fisheries and agricultural produce. “There is increased business between our two countries, and it is time we conduced a thorough feasibility assessment on the viability of a new air link. “Demand is increasing on current Asian routes and is bringing in greater business and tourism with hubs that include Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila and Bali.” The Prime Minister said increased trade and investment between Papua New Guinea and Thailand was increasing in the fisheries sector. “We are pleased to see growing fisheries sector investment from Thailand in our country,” the Prime Minister said. “There are areas issues where we can see improvements needed, including the greater use of Papua New Guinean staff in the production process. “We will continue to work with our Thai counterparts on matters, and further enhance trade and investment between our two countries.”
