Papua New Guinean Prime Minister. Peter O’Neill arrived in Delhi City, the capital of India, on Tuesday 18 August, to attend the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Corporation (FIPIC).
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill was received at the airport by a delegation from India’s Ministry for External Affairs as well as the Papua New Guinea Ambassador to India, H.E. Tarsicius Eri. He said the forum this week was an opportunity to increase engagement in trade and culture between India and the Pacific. “The Pacific and India are building stronger relations and I look forward to advancing this cooperation through meetings this week. “I am looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and exploring opportunities for engagement. “India has a lot to offer Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands nations in areas that include using modern communications technologies for extending the reach of healthcare and education. “India’s economy is large and it is diverse, and it offers the opportunity for Papua New Guinea to increase trade. “With the Papua LNG project coming online in the coming years India is certainly a potential customer.” The Leaders meeting for the FIPiC will take place in the city of Jaipur in the north west of India in Rajasthan state. The FIPIC is an initiative of the government of India to establish a more visible and meaningful presence in the South Pacific Region. The forum is aimed at forging stronger and more strategic partnerships with the Pacific Island countries under a regional forum through existing bilateral relations.
