President of East Sepik Council of Women, Ms Sophia Mangae is still locked up in police cell since Monday.
Ms Sophia Mangae was alleged to have been beaten up by policemen and locked up in Wewak Police lockup for standing up in defense of a rape victim. The rapists are alleged to be members of the police force. Sophia's son Johnny Kasik told Rose Amos how the Wewak Police Station Commander treated his mother, when she and a group of women went to lay a formal complaint, on the rape case. Em arrestim em but em ino layim charges long em..Since Monday kam now mipla checkim ol lo station... Ol assaultim em because ol tok ol mekim sampla illegal protest but displa ino tru . Ol no mekim wanpla protest. Ol em ol wokabaut lo regardim case blo wanpla... displa girl we em rapim lo wanpla dawn raid long wanpla ples long Kawanumbu." NBC News understands, President of the National Council of Women, Ms. Schola Kakas is discussing this matter with Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga and his Minister. Meantime, Acting Police Commissioner, Simon Kauba has expressed dissatisfaction over the whole saga. Director of Police Media Unit, Superintendent Dominic Kakas said the acting Police Commissioner has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter. Speaking to NBC East Sepik from Port Moresby, Superintendent Kakas said police from outside of East Sepik will be brought into the province to carry out the investigation.
