The recent passing of Bills in the House has been criticized.
Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Basil said the Government through Parliament has bulldozed the important Constitutional Amendments Bills without extensive consultations. He said inquiries in the regions were never conducted due to lack of funds but only carried out newspaper advertisements which didn't receive any feedback. Mr Basil said despite this, Parliament went ahead to pass the bills. ''Those laws are good for Papua New Guineans, but we have to allow the permanent Parliamentary Committee on constitutional. and Sabonia Legislation to complete their task in ensuring that Papua New Guineans are informed and Papua New Guineans should come in and give their views before government brings the bills on the floor to be passed. Now, we understand that the committee was suppose to hold their Momase Region workshop in Lae on the 13th of January, 2014 and in the Highlands and Mt. Hagen from 15th January, 2014 and New Guinea in Kokopo on the 17th January, 2014 and in the Southern NCD in Parliament on the 20th of January, 2014". The Parliament, passed the bills, after statements were made by the parliamentary committee chairman, Solan Mirisin on the committee's task in carrying out consultations. Both Mr Basil and Opposition Leader Belden Namah were away on electoral duties in the districts when the bills were passed. The bills that were passed were Dual Citizenship bill 2013, the Appointment of Certain Officers bill 2013, the Independent Commission Against Corruption bill 2013, and the Organic Law on Local Level Government District Development Authority Bill 2013.
