The Deputy Opposition Leader and Member for Bulolo, said PNG needs proper data collection to measure its progress.
Mr Basil is concerned the country, does not have a reliable data collection, analysis and timely dissemination process to guide planning and development objectives. He claims that many statistics and planning is done on estimated and projected figures, that can overestimate or deflect the real situation on the ground. Basil reiterates that planning and development priorities are based on adhoc basis, and political considerations rather than needs of the people based on population, geography and accessibility to basic services. He adds that most of the existing national policies are also created from comfort of urban centres without reliable data and information from the mass population. Mr Basil is also concerned about measuring the country's objectives of Vision 2050, the 30-year Development Strategy Program, the Medium Term Development Strategy and various other sectoral plans.
