The Department of Environment and Conservation will be taking a legal action against the operator of the Sinivit Gold Mine in East New Britain, New Guinea Gold Limited, for negligence and environmental degradation.
It said it will further blacklist the Canadian company from engaging in any further mining activities in the country. The company shutdown the mine and left last year without properly notifying the government, after seven years of operation, leaving behind a trail of destruction to the land and environment including the pollution of the Warangoi River. Member for Pomio, Elias Kapavore, who's electorate the mine is located in, raised a series of questions in Parliament to the Minister responsible, John Pundari, what the government was doing to address the environmental damages including cyanide spillage. Minister Pundari said, his Department was notified of the problem in September 2014, and they have so far undertaken four trips into the area to conducted tests and studies which have found astounding evidences. "I will used every legal means possible to have the developer answerable to this environmental dilemma it cost. This is basically to bring the developer have to clean up the mess, it created and also I want this company and it's board members to be a possible blacklisted in Papua New Guinea. So that they will not combat anymore mining business in this country. In the meantime, Mr. Speaker my department is working closely with the East New Britain Provincial Administration and we will continue to condor regular waste quality sampling from within the mine area and down river all the way to the mouth of the Warangoi River and inform the public of the results."
