Addressing gender issues is increasingly becoming a focus for various international institutions and governments across the globe.
Assistant Secretary for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Richard Yakam, addressing the meeting of APEC Policy Partnership on Women in Economy (PPWE) says, gender is a cross-cutting issue across various sectors including education, labour and employment, health, agriculture, forestry and financial sectors among others. He says while a lot of progress has been made in some areas, there's very little or no progress at all in others. Mr. Yakam says the area in which P-N-G saw much success is the financial services sector. He says the banking services and especially the Microfinance industry in P-N-G has significantly grown and has expanded rapidly towards remote parts of the country. Since 2010, the 24.9-million-Dollars or 100-plus-million-Kina P-N-G Micro Finance expansion project to rural communities, assisted by ADB and the Government of Australia has been successful. Another is the First Micro Bank, the Mi-Bank cash launched in 2011, making it the first bank-led deployment of mobile money in the Pacific, as well the Women's Micro-bank, the first in the Pacific and the fourth in the world. Mr. Yakam says the government is also still carrying out legislative reforms to ensure women become active politics.
