Three immigration officers charge with the assault of a refugee in Manus has pleaded not guilty at the Lorengau District Court.
Randall Livingstone, Kopi Kaminiel and Septer Wailiou were alleged to have assaulted Moshen Shakaravi, a processed Iranian Refugee outside a hotel in Lorengau last Monday. Shakravi breached the 6p-m curfew imposed on the refugees and instead of bringing him to the East Lorengau Transit centre he was allegedly assaulted. The three men were arrested later in the week, after a complaint was made and released on a bail of 100 kina each. Monica Soón from NBC Manus reports, the trio pleaded not guilty to the charge before magistrate Francis Kalai. The case was further adjourned to the 26th of this month for possible hearing. About 140 processed refugees are at the East Lorengau transit centre waiting for their papers to be sorted out before they can be settled in other provinces.
