Papua New Guinea government will decide soon on how the death penalty will be executed in the country, a forum has been told.
Dr Lawrence Kalinoe, the Secretary for the Department of Justice and Attorney-General revealed that at a public forum in Mendi, Southern Highlands, on Monday. He said the options available were hanging, electrocution or execution by a firing squad. He told people during an awareness at the Mendi police station ground that Malaysia and Indonesia (which enforce the death penalty) were assisting the Government in finalising legal and administrative mechanisms to implement capital punishment. He said the Government was serious about reducing or ending barbaric and horrific crimes committed against weak and vulnerable citizens, including the young and old. “Most serious crimes such as aggravated rape of a female minor aged 12 to 16, murder and sorcery-related crimes which have been mandated under the Criminal Code Act will attract the death penalty,” Kalinoe said. He said the Government was fed up with “barbaric, brutal and horrific crimes” and wanted to put an end to them. “It has directed the Department of Justice and Attorney-General and other law enforcing agencies to implement the death penalty without any further delay,” he said. Kalinoe said a report had been submitted to the Government to consider which mode of execution to use. He said more than 10 people were currently on death row.
