The National Government has been informed to seriously address the on-going teacher problems of leave fares and other entitlements, once and for all.
This follows a planned protest by teachers in Western province and their colleagues in several provinces in the Highlands and Islands region over non-payment of their claims. Education Secretary Doctor Michael Tapo told NBC News, they have informed the Government's Chief Secretary and the Minister to advise the Prime Minister on the matter. Doctor Tapo said, 26-point-9 million Kina has been allocated to each province, citing high costs of airfares and lack of yearly budgetary reviews as major impediments. Doctor Tapo reiterated that teachers' leave entitlements is the responsibility of respective Provincial Education Authorities and not the National Department of Education. Doctor Tapo also called on Provincial Education Authorities to be vigilant in spending functional grants, to avoid the same mistake this year.
