THE government has given K21 million to the Solomon Islands as a relief and development grant assistance.
Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato said K1 million was relief assistance for the recent flood in Honiara and K20 million was for development assistance. Pato conveyed the country’s condolence on the loss of lives and damage to infrastructure to the Honiara government and its people. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo received the funding, saying it was a “true reflection of Melanesian cooperation and support by Solomon Islands big brother PNG”. Pato and Lilo reiterated the strong bond between the two countries especially the cultural and people-to-people ties. They discussed surveillance of the maritime border, fisheries resources, labour mobility and investment promotion. Lilo expressed his concerns over the recent closure of the Gold Ridge Mine. A brief prepared by the Solomon Islands government was given to Pato to be considered by the PNG Government. Pato signed a Memorandum of Understanding on higher education and human resource development cooperation. It gives effect to a commitment made by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill in 2012 for PNG to provide 800 scholarships for Solomon Islands students to study in PNG on a four-year programme starting this year Comments are closed.
