PAPUA New Guineans wanting to visit Indonesia as tourists do not need a visa to enter that country, Indonesian Ambassador Ronald JP Manik says.
He was visiting a team of public servants in Madang who were studying the Indonesian language Bahasa. Manik said a tourist from PNG could travel to Indonesia at anytime using only their passports – as long as it was stamped to allow travelling. “Those with diplomatic passports are the ones who need to apply for visas. “Those with ordinary passports do not need to apply for visas anymore,” he said. Manik said the relaxing of the tourist travel requirement was agreed to between the two governments. Prime Minister Peter O’Neill reached a deal with President Joko Widodo during a meeting in Indonesia this year. He said it should allow more Papua New Guineans to visit Indonesia since there would be a flight connecting Mt Hagen’s Kagamuga airport to Indonesia next year. Manik said PNG was the only country that shared land border with Indonesia and it was vital for Papua New Guineans to know and speak Bahasa. He said vehicles could travel from Jayapura province to Vanimo town from next year. Manik said Papua New Guineans going into Batas and Jayapura could travel by road, making trading easier through the border check points.
