Lately there has been a concern raised about the lack of prompt response by PNG Fire Service to attend to fire incidences throughout the country, especially in Port Moresby and Lae.
According to Chief Fire Officer Issac Silas, PNG Fire Service lacks equipments in relation to the procurement of new fire trucks and this is all due to no funding. Chief Fire Officer, Issac Silas says though they had funding for restructure, this is suppose to compliment with equipments for officers to use. He stressed that the tampering of fire hydrants in the city is a major disadvantage to their job when trying to put out a fire. “Fire Hydrants in the city and rest of the country are the responsibility of water companies (Eda Ranu & Water PNG) but due to its usefulness to Fire Service it is of great importance to have it available and accessible.” “Currently due to road works most water hydrants are being covered up and not being installed,” said Chief Silas.
